Tattoo allergies: an uncomfortable truth

Black ink also causes allergies

Black ink also causes allergies

Allergic reactions to tattoos, are not isolated cases, but a serious problem mainly due to the ingredients of certain paints that are used to color the drawing: salts of cobalt, titanium, zinc oxide, potassium dichromate or ferric hydrate.

Although the black one is the one that produces the least allergies, is not totally exempt since one of its components is paraphenylenediamine. On the contrary, the ink that causes the most allergic reactions is red, because it carries mercury.

Tattoo allergies: how to prevent them

Contact dermatitis: no joke

Contact dermatitis: no joke

Dermatologists from Osaka School of Medicine determined that some people are at high risk of having systemic contact dermatitis when they have been tattooed with red ink. The subjects had developed an allergy to mercury that was manifested when they ingested fish with a concentration of it.

The General University Hospital of Valencia, after examining several patients tattooed with severe infections, tumors, granulomatous reactions and contact allergies, ruled the close relationship between these and the tattoo (especially the red one)

Allergies to corticosteroid ointments

Allergies to corticosteroid ointments

Specifically, after seeing cases of patients who had allergic contact dermatitis after applying corticosteroid ointments recommended by your tattoo artist (Terra Cortril® ointment) ruled that tattoos should be considered within the group of risk factors for developing an allergy to hydrocortisone.

It is essential that the tattoo artist previously carry out a allergy test of the components of the ink that you will apply; It consists of applying a patch on the back with the allergen and leaving it for 48 hours. If there is no reaction, it can be tattooed. Do not trust a tattoo artist who does not offer you the proof.

Finally remember that they can be given local skin infections bacterial and microbacterial due to lack of hygiene, so it is essential that the establishment offers all the health guarantees legally required and follow the instructions given to us for the care of the tattoo.

Hello Gloria, when a tattoo becomes infected or produces a significant allergy, the best thing you can do is go to see a doctor as soon as possible. This will prevent the problem from getting worse. All the best!

Hello, I have tattoos in which pink always causes me some small pimples in the color but without itching and pain ... I went to the dermatologist and he told me that it was an allergy to that pigment that perhaps over time my body assimilated but that it was not to worry at least in my house?

Hello, the same thing happened to me as Camila, only with the color Red, they recommended Gluvacida or Neosporin,

Hello, I comment on my case 10 years ago I got tattooed and everything was correct 7 years ago I caught allegia to metals, watch, pants buttons etc. And now I want to perform an attuaje and I don't know if this would hurt me. The old tattoo is great and I have never had problems but it is already 10 years old and the allergy was later although some indicate that the ink would still have to reject it if it was allergic to them even if it is old. for this reason I ask.

It is urgent because in 3 days I get a tattoo

Hello, my problem is similar to those reported. After 4 months of having tattooed the red color of my tattoo I was allergic, itchy and the skin in that area became inflamed. I would like to know if this is reversible.? Will it pass over time? Can it increase? Please if anyone knows about it ..? Thanks!

    1.    Antonio Fdez said

Hello María Elena, from what you say, what causes that allergic reaction is some of the components of the red ink that the tattoo artist used in his day. From personal experience (something similar happens to me with one of my tattoos, and I have more than 15), I can tell you that it is something temporary and very distant in time. Use a moisturizer to soothe the area and make sure the skin breathes and is properly aerated. The allergic reaction will only last a couple of days and will subside. Of course, in the future (every few months) it could appear again. In any case and if the allergy is important, you should see a doctor as soon as possible.

Talking about allergies to tattoo ink is very extensive. Some time ago I uploaded a video to my YouTube channel in which I talk about the allergic reactions that tattoo inks can cause and what can be done if a tattoo causes an allergy. I advise you to take a look →

I just got a tattoo on my shoulder and I got a rash that I can do is normal because it comes out

    1.    Antonio Fdez said

Hello Monse, is the area reddened? Has the rash spread? I recommend that you try to clean the tattooed area well, apply the cream you are using to cure it and if it does not remit, go to the tattoo artist or a doctor. All the best!

Hi, I'm yvette and I suffer from severe allergies, sometimes I can't know ako pk but I would like to get a tattoo but I'm scared because of my allergies, why is she already suffering a heart attack and a pre-infarction

    1.    Antonio Fdez said

From what you say, I would talk to the tattoo artist to find out what type of ink he uses when tattooing and to know its composition in case it has any element that could be harmful to you. However, if I were in your better position I would not get tattooed. All the best!

Hi there! I got a tattoo on my right leg of a flame, and only in the part with red my skin is somewhat inflamed. In almost most of the tattoo, the red part is healing now, but on the back of the leg it is still inflamed, it is just one of the tips of the flame and it is in the color red. Reading this report left me calmer as I found out that the color red is harmful, but I would like to know if you could recommend something for the back of my leg. The rest of the red ink has healed little by little, but there is still the problem.

    1.    Antonio Fdez said

Hello Mauro, the ideal is that in this area you continue doing the daily cures and applying the cream for a few more days. If the inflammation does not subside, you should see a doctor. All the best!

Hi, I'm Clara, I have atopic skin, sometimes I get an allergy to the sun, to any cream or gel that I use for a long time and I'm going to get a tattoo this week, I talked to my tattoo artist and he told me that there was no problem and that he would still speak with which he distributes the inks to make sure, because also, I am allergic to cobalt ...

    1.    Antonio Fdez said

Hello Clara, it is very important that the tattooist make sure of the elements that make up the ink with which you will be tattooed to clear any doubts. If the ink doesn't have any components that you might be allergic to, you shouldn't have a problem. All the best!

A week ago I got a black ink tattoo on my forearm. I started to get pimples around the tattoo and the outline is red (just like in the photo of "allergies to corticosteroid ointments".
What am I supposed to do? Stop using the ointment and hope the tattoo heals? Did you see a doctor? Change for another ointment without corticosteroids?

    Thank you very much.
