The legend associated with Yngvi, king of the Swedes

Inguz Freyr Rune

Yngvi or Freyr, legendary king from which the inguz rune takes its name.

The rune inguz, also called inwaz, and representative of the sound [ŋ], could be written in various ways. It seems that its origin is in Yngvi, which in turn could be the god Freyr (Freyr means 'lord'). According to legend (although there are many variants), it is said that Odin came from Asia and conquered the northern lands. Later, he gave Denmark to his son Skjöldr and Sweden to his son Yngvi.

Thus, Yngvi became one of the first legendary kings of Sweden, in fact he is believed to be one of the ancestors of the Swedish royal family. He is associated with prosperity, good harvests, fertility, good weather, peace and pleasure, making him, as you can imagine, a highly regarded god.

One of the most famous legends of this legendary king is the one that tells his love story with the goddess Gerðr, but, for the goddess to become his wife, Yngvi has to put down his sword. That will cause his death during Ragnarök.

Rune meaning

Rune Inguz Rune

The meaning of this rune derives largely from the figure we have just described. Inguz is a symbol of love, peace and harmony, but also of sexuality (Yngvi was not the god of fertility for nothing).

The rune also has a connotation of protection and completion. Very associated with its meaning of fertility, inguz is also associated with a seed from which something will germinate, which implies a new change and new beginnings.

As you can see, the inguz rune has a legend and very interesting meanings, ideal to inspire us with a new tattoo. Tell us what you think in the comments!
