Tattoos and religion, an explosive relationship!

Tattoos & Religion

Tattoos and religion. These two words imply a relationship at least stormy, either by getting on badly ... or very well. In any case, the vision of the tattoo varies in different cultures and times of the world.

In fact, the relationship between tattoos and religion (although at the risk of simplifying) it seems to be conditioned on the fact that, if you believe in only one god, your faith probably does not like tattoos; whereas religions with many gods tend to be more flexible.

Religions against tattoos

Tattoos and Religion Back

It is no surprise that Christianity is not convinced by tattoos, in fact, for centuries its missionaries have persecuted indigenous people from distant shores to stop wearing them. Even so, the perspective has changed over the years and now tattoos are much more accepted among Christians (elements of this religion such as phrases, psalms, crosses, saints, angels ... are very popular) In a similar way, Judaism prohibits tattoos (in fact, the prohibition is based on the same verse in the Bible that for many years prohibited them in Christianity, Leviticus 19:28).

Although tattoos are not mentioned in the Qur'an, they do not thank Islam much either, in fact, they consider them sinful. Interestingly, he doesn't consider henna to be, perhaps because it is temporary.

Religions in favor of tattoos

Let us now briefly talk about current religions in which tattoos are not seen as a sin. It is the case of Buddhism, which also has its own tattoos, called sak yant, in which a monk tattoos a faithful mantras and sutras as protection.

This is also the case with Hinduism, perhaps thanks to the hundreds of years in which henna has been used. However, although this religion does not care what tattoos you wear on your body, it is very rare that its faithful wear it.

The relationship between tattoos and religion is thorny, although it is also very interesting, right? Tell us, did you know about these cases? Remember that you can tell us what you want with a comment!
