For those who do not know, the yakuza are those people who are part of the Japanese mafia. In Japan, tattoos and yakuza are two concepts that tend to be closely linked, since for a time tattoos were taboo in this country. In addition, prior to the Edo period criminals were marked with a tattoo, which helped these groups feel united by the ink.

Later, during the Edo period, designs and tattoos were taken much further, as a style with its own motifs was developed and even tattooists specialized in the yakuza. Additionally, tattoos began to be seen as a way for members to demonstrate their allegiance to a chief or clan.
