Tattoo Styles: Dotwork

Dotwork Tattoos

We continue with our series of articles in which we want to introduce you to the different tattoo styles that exist today. And as we always say, yes, there are tattoo artists who have their own style, however, all styles and tattoos emanate from techniques and styles superiors. We want to talk about these styles. Today, we will talk about one of these modern tattoo styles that have only been around for a few years.

As the title of this article cites, we want to let you know Dotwork tattoo style, also known as "Dotted or pointillism". Its history and origin is directly linked to the technique of pointillism in painting. Pointillism is a pictorial style that emerged more than 130 years ago, around 1880 by the French painter Georges Pierre Seurat.

Evidently we have to extrapolate this pictorial style to the world of tattoos. In this case, a gap has been opened in recent years, especially since minimalist tattoos have become fashionable. Dotwork tattoo designs are very varied and we can find the use of this technique in various types of tattoos.

Especially are very common in geometric figures. Although, it can also make an appearance in old school style tattoos. And although for many it is not defined as a style as such, but rather as a technique, due to its popularization and evolution within the world of tattooing, we can say that it has gained acceptance as one more tattoo style.

A tattoo faithful to the dotwork style serves as a kind of stencil or stencil, more typical of graffiti. The points would come to fulfill the function that the aerosol fulfills in the stencils. The vast majority are made in black, although we can find some designs that combine colors or have some details in different shades. Shaded and diluted shades of black are also often used.

A style that has earned unfounded criticism

Dotwork Tattoos

Since its appearance and popularization, there are not a few tattoo artists who have come across this type of tattoos to criticize it and cross it out of "Bad shadows" o "Tattoos that only look good the first few months". Yes, it is too peculiar a style, however, I think that these criticisms that it has received are not justified. And we could say that this style is in line with other types of tattoos that are in fashion in recent years.

A clear example of other tattoos that are related to dotwork are minimalist tattoos. Many of them have dotted areas and well, you could also say that a minimalist tattoo is "Too easy" and that, therefore, could not be defined as a good tattoo. However, I do not agree with this way of thinking. Any tattoo, if it reflects the client's idea, will be correct.
