The story of Isis and the lost penis
The title is not a clickbait, even if it seems like it. Legend has it that Seth invited Osiris, Isis's partner, to a banquet with the intention of killing him. Seth, with the help of his acolytes, managed to lock Osiris in a coffin and dismember him and then throw him into the Nile. ISis, who did not lose hope of seeing her husband again, gathered all the pieces of her partner except his, say, masculine attributes (it seems that they had been eaten by a fish).
Finding her husband's penis nowhere, Isis began to pray for Osiris to return from the dead, but to no avail. Then Isis was transformed into a bird and Osiris returned to life just to impregnate her. The goddess would thus give birth to Horus, another of the most important Egyptian gods.
The meaning of Isis
Does this story sound familiar to you? Well, surely not, but surely you do see the similar to the cult of the Virgin Mary, and it seems that the figure of Isis could have influenced that of the Christian virgin.
In any case, the traditional meaning of this goddess is related to motherhood, marriage and fertility, not only because she is the mother of Horus, but also because of the story we have just told. In addition, her name means 'throne', which is why it is customary to represent her with this piece of furniture on her head, although she was also known for being the “goddess of a thousand names”.
